Court grants Abba Kyari temporary bail to bury mother

 

In order to return home and finish the funeral ceremonies for his mother Yachilla Kyari, who passed away on May 5, 2024, the remanded former Commander of the Force Intelligence Response Team, Abba Kyari, was granted a two-week bail on Tuesday.

Kyari’s legal team applied for and Justice Emeka Nwike of the Federal High Court in Abuja granted him two weeks of bail on compassionate grounds.

After his arrest in February 2022, Kyari had been placed under arrest.

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency arrested the well-known police investigator for drug offenses, and he was held for 27 months.

Judge Nwite gave him interim bail on Tuesday in the amount of N50 million, with one surety in the same amount.

Our correspondent was able to obtain a copy of the verdict on Wednesday, and it stated that Kyari was to turn in his passport to the court.

During the two weeks that his bail was in effect, he was also told to report to the nearest NDLEA formation at all times.

The judge ruled that the surety had to be an attorney and willing to deposit his Call to Bar certificate with the court’s deputy registrar.

According to reports, Kyari is the oldest of his mother’s ten children.

He was not allowed to be present for his mother’s Islamic funeral, which took place on the day of her passing.

The prosecution did not object to his request for bail so that he may attend the finish of the funeral rites.

He was denied bail twice previously by Justice Nwite.

Kyari filed an appeal against the denial of his bail request, but the Court of Appeal likewise rejected it.

After being listed as sought by the NDLEA due to suspected connections to a global narcotics syndicate, Kyari was taken into custody on February 14, 2022.

Along with Sunday Ubia, Bawa James, Simon Agirigba, and John Nuhu, he was arraigned on March 7, 2022, as a member of the police Intelligence Response Team.

Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu was the site of the arrests of two accused drug traffickers, Chibunna Umeibe and Emeka Ezenwanne, among others.

Kyari and four other defendants entered not guilty pleas at their arraignment; however, Umeibe and Ezenwanne, the sixth and seventh defendants, entered guilty pleas and were found guilty as a result.

The Police Service Commission dismissed Kyari and two senior officers in 2022 after they were implicated in a cocaine deal with the suspended deputy commissioner of police. The policemen in question were Sunday Ubua and James Bawa.

With effect from February 14, 2022, the Police Service Commission suspended Assistant Superintendent of Police James Bawa and Assistant Commissioner of Police Sunday Ubua from exercising the authority and duties of their respective positions.

Under the charge designated FHC/ABJ/CR/57/2022, Kyari is going to stand trial for his role in the 17.55 kg cocaine trade.

Additionally, Kyari was charged with trying to hinder authorities from carrying out their duty by threatening to withhold the 17.55 kilogrammes of drug from testing in exchange for $61,400.00.
